This short case presents the situation of a young dual-career Nigerian couple longing to have children. He has a very good job in a bank. She is very competent but under heavy pressure to achieve targets in her marketing job in a telecommunications company. After several miscarriages, medical tests reveal that high stress is preventing her from carrying a pregnancy to its term. She asks for a transfer to a less hectic department but her requests are turned down. The husband steps in, demanding that she quits. The case is relevant to African audiences in the formal business sector, but also to managers from the Western world planning to work in Africa. It permits a discussion of both the ethical evaluation of certain policies concerning working conditions and the need for employees, in certain situations, to make choices in line with their values.
