Abstract:

This is a new formulation of basic advice for both those new to case teaching and those who are already experienced. Written by John Boehrer-- longtime head of the Pew Faculty Fellowship Program for prospective case teachers--this essay uses a single case (Hungary between East and West, C18-95-1286.0) as a point of departure to discuss some of the most basic ideas in case teaching. How should one prepare to lead a case discussion? How does the class dynamic differ from that of the traditional lecture context? What makes for effective opening and follow- up questions? This should be considered essential reading for case method practitioners, new and old.
