Abstract:
Thales is a French company with business interests in integrated solutions for the electronics and defence sectors. Thales was known as the 'Compagnie Francaise de Thomson-Houston'. It was founded as a multinational company over 100 years before. During this time, Thomson managed to grow through successful acquisitions strategies. At the end of a major restructuring phase in 2000, it changed its name to Thales. Thales as it is known today, is considered to be one of the most famous international arms manufacturers, which generate more than 50% of its total sales, while its civil business units generate approximately 40%. The objective of this case is to discuss and discover the issues related to the professional electronics and arms industry, a sector rarely discussed and not so well known. The case throws light upon the innovation, research and development (R&D) in the electronics and the arms business, ethical dilemma and the company's internal organisation and the role of the State.
