Abstract:

This technical note is to accompany the case 'Vodafone: Out of Many, One' (304-625-1). The abstract of the case is as follows: Vodafone Group Plc was the world's largest cellphone provider by revenue. Since 1999, Vodafone had invested $270 billion (225 billion euros) mostly in stock, and building an empire spanning 26 countries. It now controls cell-phone operations in 16 countries and had a minority stake in companies in 10 other countries. This case traces the growth history of Vodafone and its capability to transform and adapt itself to a dramatically changing market environment in the immensely complex telecommunication sector. The case focuses on Vodafone's growth through the acquisitions and integration of acquired units through its corporate branding strategy. The case raises the issues of Vodafone's expansion strategy and its ability to harness a competitive edge through global synergies together with having a differentiated product set. The teaching note was written by A Som.
