Background to workshop
This practical and intensive workshop will offer a maximum of twelve inexperienced case writers the opportunity to take time out to work on an idea they already have for a case. The skills and knowledge that participants will acquire at this workshop will enable them to develop their case and to identify and prepare additional support material that will enhance the learning experience of their target audience.
Participants
Start Writing Cases will be of benefit to:
- Junior or senior faculty from any academic discipline who have little experience of writing cases for teaching purposes
- Business based trainers interested in preparing their own materials for employee development
- Those who are keen to begin writing cases or wish to enhance their case writing skills
Programme
Before the workshop each participant completes a case template outlining their case ideas to be worked on throughout the programme. Participants bring their case draft and background material to the workshop.
Key issues to be explored at the workshop will include:
- What makes a good case
- Specifying and achieving clear teaching and learning objectives
- Overcoming obstacles to student learning
- Identifying and avoiding common pitfalls
- Enhancing the learning experience of your students
- Tools and techniques for improving the effectiveness of case studies and their delivery
- Case evaluation and assessment methodologies
- How to publish cases
Workshop objectives
Participants
will work on their case draft and prepare a teaching plan and teaching
note for presentation at the end of the workshop. In doing so, the
principal objectives are that participants will:
- Appreciate what makes a good case and the benefits of a teaching note
- Develop the confidence to write their own cases
- Learn tools and techniques of case crafting to meet learning objectives
