Posthumous case writing success for Sumantra Ghoshal in 2006 European Case Awards

Two years after his untimely death, a business-teaching case study by Sumantra Ghoshal, The Transformation of BP, co-authored by Lynda Gratton and Michelle Rogan at London Business School, has won the overall prize in the European Case Awards 2006. The case was a category winner in 2005. Sumantra Ghoshal was one of the greatest case writers of all time and this success brings the total number of times his cases have won a European Case Award to thirteen, five of which were the overall award.

London Business School won two further category awards and INSEAD four. Other award-winning schools in 2006 were: Groupe ESSEC, Paris; HEC, University of Geneva; IMD, Lausanne and WHU, Vallendar. With the exception of IMD, these schools are all first time winners.

The European Case Awards 2006 will be presented on 21 September at a special dinner in London. The Sumantra Ghoshal Award for Excellence in Case Writing, currently held by INSEAD, will be received by Laura Tyson, Dean of London Business School. This award, created in 2004 as a tribute to Professor Ghoshal, is awarded annually to the school at which the overall winning case was developed.

The European Case Awards have been presented by ecch annually since 1991. They recognise and celebrate the success of the authors and institutions of cases that have achieved the highest rates of growth in popularity worldwide. Jeffrey Gray, Director of ecch, commented, "The enduring success of Sumantra Ghoshal's cases is a tribute to his remarkable gift as a case writer and teacher. In 2006, it is also most encouraging to see the renewed presence of new names of both authors and institutions featuring, and prizes being awarded in every category - a clear indication of the continuing growth in high quality case writing across a wide range of institutions".
