Dublin School overall winner in 2004 European Case Awards
For the first time, an Irish author and business school have enjoyed success in the European Case Awards with Dr Eleanor O'Higgins, of University College Dublin, taking the prize for the overall winner. She will be presented with her award at a ceremony in Newman House, Dublin on 9 September 2004 for her case study Ryanair - The Low Fares Airline. The Guest of Honour, Frank Cunnane, one of the instigators of what was to become ecch, and who was Executive Director of Management Training at the Irish Management Institute at the time, will present the awards.
At the same event, a new award will be inaugurated in memory of Professor Sumantra Ghoshal, who died unexpectedly this year. This award, The Sumantra Ghoshal Award for Excellence in Case Writing, will be presented annually to the business school at which the overall winning case was developed, and will be accepted on 9 September by Eamonn Walsh, Dean of the Smurfit Business School at UCD. Professor Ghoshal was one of the most eminent case writers of recent times, himself having been the winner of European Case Awards on numerous occasions. His last case, written at London Business School, Lufthansa 2000: Maintaining the Change Momentum, has also won an award in 2004. His co-author, Dr Heike Bruch will accept her award alongside Professor Ghoshal's posthumous award.
Jeffrey Gray, Director of ecch comments, "The fact that we have, in 2004, a first-time winner from Ireland is a reflection of the number of high quality cases being authored at more schools than ever and used in teaching worldwide. At the same time, the inauguration of The Sumantra Ghoshal Award for Excellence in Case Writing will recognise the key role of universities in providing institutional support for the vital task of developing up-to-date, curriculum materials of the highest quality. Professor Ghoshal was a true master of case writing and we believe that this new award will provide a lasting tribute to his achievements in this field".

Notes for Editors:
ecch presents the annual European Case Awards to highlight the central importance of the development of new cases and the case teaching method in management education. European Case Awards have been made annually since 1991. Awards are presented according to the extent to which individual European business cases have been adopted, worldwide, by business schools, universities and companies, over preceding years. A case may not win in one category for more than one year. The Marketing category award is presented with sponsorship from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Finance, Accounting and Control category award with sponsorship from The ICFAI University, India, and the Awards are presented in association with BusinessWeek.
ecch is the largest single source of case studies in the world, with, currently, in excess of 25,000 cases in its catalogue. It is an independent membership-based, non-profit organisation with offices at Cranfield University in the UK and Babson College in the USA. ecch is dedicated to supporting authors and users of case studies and promoting the case method of learning. It provides the interface between the authors of cases and the educational institutions and businesses that use them for teaching and learning purposes. ecch also provides seminars and symposia on case writing and teaching.
