press release, June 2003
Diverse winners of 2003 European Case Awards represent both established authors and first-time winning schools

Sumantra Ghoshal, of London Business School, historically, one of the most successful case authors, won the Overall 2003 European Case Award with Lufthansa: The Challenge of Globalisation. As in 2002, a case exploring issues in the airline industry has taken the overall prize*. This is the first time London Business School has scooped the top award in the thirteen-year history of the awards and the tenth time Sumantra Ghoshal has been honoured with a European Case Award.

The six subject categories were won by authors from five schools, with INSEAD being the only school to reap two awards this year. Schools and authors new to the Awards, won all the other four category awards: Aarhus University, Cass Business School, CPA, Paris and Henley Management College.

According to Jeffrey Gray, Director of ecch, "In one of the most remarkable lists of winners since the inception of the ECCH Case Awards, all but one of the awards go to authors without any past record of formal case writing recognition. Furthermore, four of the schools appear in the lists for the very first time, a most encouraging indication of the spread of excellence in case writing beyond the confines of the well-known case writing institutions."

Notes for Editors:

ecch presents the annual European Case Awards to highlight the central importance of the development of new cases and the case teaching method in management education. Awards are presented according to the extent to which individual European business cases have been adopted, worldwide, by business schools, universities and companies, over preceding years. A case may not win in one category for more than one year.

The European Case Awards have been made annually since 1991 as a way of acknowledging the central role cases play in the teaching of business. The marketing category award is presented with sponsorship from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Awards are presented in association with Business Week.

ecch is the largest single source of case studies in the world, with, currently, in excess of 19,000 cases in its catalogue. It is an independent membership-based, non-profit organisation with offices at Cranfield University in the UK and Babson College in the USA. The ecch is dedicated to supporting authors and users of case studies and promoting the case method of learning. It provides the interface between the authors of cases and the educational institutions and businesses that use them for teaching and learning purposes. The ecch also provides seminars and symposia on case writing and teaching.
