Case study initiatives: ecch and The Boston Consulting Group collaborate

ecch and The Boston Consulting Group are pleased to announce a new collaboration to promote the use of case studies in management education. This co-operation will focus on two existing ecch initiatives, the European Business Schools Case Challenge and the annual European Case Awards. In addition ecch and BCG will work together to create a new case writing programme.

The European Business Schools Case Challenge is a biennial initiative that brings a prestigious and demanding international student competition into the business education calendar. The sixteen participating schools are all from the top ranked business schools in Europe*. Teams of five MBA students from each competing school will work over an intense two days to evaluate issues in a previously unpublished case study based upon real events, and produce well-argued recommendations. The case challenge will take place at INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France from 13-14 April 2007.

The European Case Awards have been presented by ecch annually since 1991. They recognise outstanding case development in Europe and celebrate the success of the authors of business case studies that achieve the highest measurable rates of growth in popularity worldwide. The Awards are presented in up to nine categories plus an overall winner. The Sumantra Ghoshal Award for Excellence in Case Writing is presented to the business school at which the overall winning case was developed. The 2007 Awards will be presented in September at a special ceremony in France.

Building on the support to case writing already given independently by ecch and BCG, a new innovative programme will be established jointly. The programme will focus on the development of new cases and the promotion of best practice in case writing.

Jeffrey Gray, Director of ecch, welcomes the partnership with BCG. "We are delighted to announce the collaboration between ecch and BCG and look forward to working together to promote the use of case studies in management education. We are proud to be associated with a management consulting firm of major international stature that has a strong record of supporting management education in Europe through direct investment in European business schools and case study development as well as recruiting several hundred MBA graduates each year."

Senior Vice President and Head of People Team of BCG, Mr Michel Fredeau, said: "At BCG we recognise the vital role of developing case studies in business learning and have been active in the development of a number of case studies with a focus on innovation, strategic advantage and social entrepreneurship. We are delighted to be able to assist ecch in developing the case method of learning through the forthcoming European Business Schools Case Challenge, the Awards and the case writing programme."

The case method

The case method of learning, pioneered in the early 20th Century at Harvard University, has become the favoured teaching method of most of the world's leading business schools. A process of discussion and analysis, guided by a skilled case teacher, leads class participants to deeper insights into management issues and their resolution. Faculty and students familiar with the case method universally regard it as the most effective and enjoyable way to learn.
