INSEAD breaks records in European Case Awards 2007 Scholarship support for case writing also delivers first success in Awards
INSEAD has won an unprecedented seven of the nine European Case Awards 2007 and crowned this success by also winning the Overall Award. This is the tenth time INSEAD has won the Overall Award in the 17-year history of the Awards. No school has ever been this successful in a single year. The 2007 Awards will be presented in September at a special ceremony in Paris.
A business case study about the fashion brand Diesel won the Overall Award and had been a Marketing category winner in 2006. The Overall Award enables INSEAD to reclaim the Sumantra Ghoshal Award for Excellence in Case Writing that it held two years ago. (London Business School won it in 2006 with a posthumous case by Ghoshal himself and Lynda Gratton and Michelle Rogan.) London Business School won one Award this year in the Ethics and Social Responsibility category.
For the first time, a case written with the assistance of an ecch Philip Law Scholarship, which helps research students turn field research into teaching cases, won one Award in the Entrepreneurship category. The case about a fast-food chain was authored at the University College Dublin Business Schools.
INSEAD's Pierre Chandon, winner of the Overall Award, also won the Marketing category again this year with a case about Unilever in Brazil. Jonathan Story also wins for a second consecutive year the Economics, Politics and Business Environment category with a case about India. The winning case in the Finance, Accounting and Control category was co-written at INSEAD with an author from the University of St Gallen, Kühne-Institute of Logistics.
The European Case Awards have been presented by ecch annually since 1991. They recognise outstanding case development in Europe and celebrate the success of the authors of business case studies that achieve measurable, highest rates of growth in popularity worldwide. Jeffrey Gray, Director of ecch, commented, "The success of INSEAD this year is a real testament to its commitment to supporting faculty in producing high quality, original case teaching materials at the school. Their impact is worldwide, as management educators select them for teaching across the globe. This year we are also delighted to announce the association of the international strategy and general management consulting firm, The Boston Consulting Group, (BCG), with the Awards."
Commenting on the association, Nicolas Harlé, Vice President, himself an INSEAD MBA and former award-winning case author said, "At BCG we recognise the vital role of developing case studies in business learning and have taken an active role in the development of a number of case studies with a focus on innovation, strategic advantage and social entrepreneurship. We know the value of quality case studies in our own continual learning and that of our new hires to help us constantly better serve our clients. We are delighted to be able to assist ecch in developing the case method of learning through the Awards and the forthcoming European Business Schools Case Challenge."

Notes for editors:
ecch is the largest single source of management case studies in the world, with, currently, in excess of 46,000 items in its case catalogue available to all through www.ecch.com. ecch is dedicated to supporting authors and users of case studies and promoting the case method of learning. Pioneered in the early 20th Century at Harvard University, it has become the favoured teaching method of most of the world's leading business schools. ecch is an independent, membership-based, non-profit organisation with offices at Cranfield University in the UK and Babson College in the USA. It provides the interface between the authors of cases and the educational institutions and businesses that use them for teaching and learning. ecch has an extensive international programme of workshops and events on case writing and teaching.
The European Case Awards are presented by ecch each year in up to nine categories plus an overall winner, in the country of the institution at which the overall winning case was developed. The Sumantra Ghoshal Award for Excellence in Case Writing is presented annually to the business school at which the overall winning case was developed. It was inaugurated in 2004 in memory of Sumantra Ghoshal, one of the most successful case writers of recent times, following his untimely death.
Each year, up to ten, Philip Law case development scholarships are available to research students at ecch member institutions to develop cases based on field research carried out during their studies. The scholarships aim to stimulate new case authors and strengthen the role of original research in student management learning. Each scholarship is worth EUR 1,525 and the student attends an ecch case writing workshop at no charge. www.ecch.com/scholarships
The third European Business Schools Case Challenge, an initiative of ecch, takes place in April at INSEAD. Teams of MBAs from sixteen of the top case teaching business schools across Europe will work, in anonymity, on a specially commissioned case study over two days to produce winning proposals. INSEAD hosts the 2007 competition because its team won the last European Business Schools Case Challenge. The first was won by Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. www.ecch.com/casechallenge
Since its founding in 1963, The Boston Consulting Group has focused on helping clients achieve competitive advantage. The firm believes that best practices or benchmarks are rarely enough to create lasting value and that positive change requires new insights into economics and markets and organisational capabilities to chart and deliver on winning strategies. They consider every assignment to be a unique set of opportunities and constraints for which no standard solution will be adequate. BCG has 63 offices in 37 countries and serves companies in all industries and markets. For further information, please visit www.bcg.com
