What is the case method?
Pioneered in the early 20th Century at Harvard University, it has become the favoured teaching method of many of the world's best business schools. Its instructor led, dynamic, participant based approach is built around the case study. Through discussion, analysis and sometimes role-play, participants in the classroom arrive at new insights to solve management problems. Case teaching faculty and students who have experienced learning with cases generally regard it as the most effective, and enjoyable way to learn. A number of books are available through ecch if you would like to gain a deeper understanding of the case method. ecch also runs a programme of case teaching and writing workshops.
What is a case?
Case studies recount real life business or management situations that present a dilemma or uncertain outcome. The case puts the scenario into the context of the events, people and factors that influence it. Cases are generally written by business school faculty with particular learning objectives in mind and are comprehensively tested in the classroom before publication. Relevant documentation or audiovisual items and a carefully crafted teaching note often accompany cases.
