About the Ivey case collection

The Richard Ivey School of Business at The University of Western Ontario has been using the case method since 1922 to teach practical management skills to undergraduate, graduate and executive students.

Ivey's case studies are concise, interactive, dynamic, and participant-driven teaching tools designed to guide students through real-world examples of business issues. Students learn to analyze information, develop rational alternatives, make decisions, recommend implementation tactics in time-sensitive situations, and communicate and defend their findings, just as they would as practicing managers.

Ivey's faculty members write primarily field-based cases to support their teaching, and the cases are used extensively in Ivey's undergraduate, MBA and executive program curricula across seven major functional areas: accounting; finance; general management/strategy; human resources management/organizational behavior; management science and information systems; marketing; and production and operations management. Cases in each of these functional areas may be further categorized as having an entrepreneurship theme or international focus. In addition, some Ivey cases are intended for an introductory audience the equivalent of the first two years of an undergraduate program. These cases tend to be shorter and more focused than our regular cases, which have an intended market of MBA and undergraduate students.

Ivey is the second largest producer of business cases in the world. The collection currently consists of approximately 2,000 case studies, 72 percent of which have teaching notes. A continuing stream of new case studies is necessary to stay abreast of current developments, so Ivey adds approximately 200 new classroom-tested cases to its collection each year, all of which are edited to ensure consistent presentation and style. While the majority of these cases are written by Ivey's own faculty members, case studies written by non-Ivey faculty members are also in our collection, and we exclusively distribute materials from several other, smaller, case producers as well.

Translations of Ivey cases

In 2006 ecch announced the addition of over 400 Ivey cases into the ecch collection which have been translated into French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish and Traditional Chinese. Translated cases help promote the use of the case method in other countries. Ivey often authorizes the translation of specified cases by reputable educational institutions. Due to the legalities involved in protecting copyright and to protect the quality of the case collection, all cases must be translated with the specific approval of Ivey Publishing, Ivey Management Services. For additional information about how you can translate Ivey case studies into a language of your choice please contact the Ivey Publishing office.
