What is a case?
Case studies recount real life business or management situations that present to business executives a dilemma or uncertain outcome. The case puts the scenario into the context of the events, people and factors that influence it. Cases are generally written by business school faculty with particular learning objectives in mind and are refined in the classroom before publication. Relevant documentation or audiovisual items and a carefully crafted teaching note often accompany cases.
How long is a case and how is it presented?
Generally, a case is an A4 (US letter in North America) paper document of between 10 and 30 pages on average. The length of a case is indicated in your case search results. Sometimes, depending on the subject matter, cases may contain colour illustrations. Cases may also be accompanied by audiovisual items, such as DVDs, slides or CD-ROMs (each item must be ordered separately). Some interactive cases have been produced in electronic format. Cases may come in several parts (each case in a series must be ordered separately). Cases may have an accompanying teaching note (which may be ordered in addition to the case), a document of an average 10 pages.
