Background to workshops

Start Writing Cases is a series of two workshops designed for people who have yet to complete writing their first case. Part 1: Getting Started enables workshop participants to begin writing a case they may already have in mind. Six months later, there is the option to attend the new Part 2: Completing your Case, which allows participants to progress their case to completion. Part 2: Completing your Case has been introduced by ecch in response to feedback from previous participants of Getting Started, who felt that they would benefit from further support as they progress to completion of their case.

Part 1: Getting Started

5-6 November 09.30h-17.00h

During this practical and intensive first workshop, a maximum of twelve inexperienced case writers will work on an idea they already have for a case. The workshop will provide the skills and knowledge to enable them to develop their case and to identify and prepare additional support materials to enhance the learning experience. Each participant completes a case template to outline case ideas before the workshop. Participants bring this case draft and any background material to the workshop.

Who is this workshop for?

Part 1: Getting Started will be of benefit to:

  • Junior or senior faculty from any academic discipline who have little experience of writing teaching cases
  • Business based trainers interested in preparing their own materials for employee development
  • Anyone keen to begin writing cases or enhance their case writing skills

Programme

Key issues to be explored at the workshop will include:
  • What makes a good case? Key features of top selling cases and the teaching notes that generally accompany them
  • Specifying and achieving clear teaching and learning objectives for your target audience
  • Overcoming obstacles to student learning
  • Identifying and avoiding common pitfalls in case writing
  • Enhancing the learning experience of your students
  • Tools and techniques for improving the effectiveness of case studies and their delivery
  • Case evaluation and assessment methodologies

Objectives

The principal objectives are that participants will:

  • Appreciate what makes a good case and the benefits of a teaching note
  • Develop the confidence to write their own cases
  • Progress their own case idea
  • Learn tools and techniques of case crafting to meet learning objectives
  • Learn how to enhance cases and case delivery

Part 2: Completing your Case (optional)

8 April 09.30h-17.00h

Following Part 1: Getting Started, participants will have worked on their initial case draft. This follow-up day offers the opportunity to receive feedback on their developed cases. It is designed to help reach the completion stage of the case writing process.

Who is this workshop for?

Part 2: Completing your Case is open to all participants of Part 1: Getting Started who feel they would benefit from additional input, support and feedback as they progress to the completion of their case.

Programme

This day will focus on refining participants' case drafts for use in the classroom, prior to possible publication and/or submission into the ecch collection after classroom testing and refinement. All participants will be able to have their draft reviewed by an ecch tutor. Short one-to-one tutorials will be available and any issues arising from Part 1 will be addressed. The important aspect of preparing a teaching plan will be included. How to publish cases will also be explored.
