The case
Most
business school students are familiar with the case method of learning
as practised by the leading business schools worldwide. Probably the
most effective way to bring wide practical experience into the
classroom, the detailed examination of a real business situation allows
students to identify with the players in the situation and grapple with
their challenges and opportunities. The European Business Schools Case
Challenge involves teams of five students analysing, under intense time
pressure, a complex business situation in a specially commissioned,
previously unseen, case study and presenting their responses. The case
challenge provides an opportunity for potential high flyers to prove
their expertise in the ultimate test - real life problem solving, head
to head with peers from schools that they respect.
The story
After
Oxford University's Saïd Business School won the first trial case
challenge in 1998, ecch developed the idea of a regular competition to
raise the profile of the case method in management education. The Saïd
Business School was invited to host the first biennial event in 2005
at its Oxford facility. Fourteen teams from leading European business
schools took part and the INSEAD (Fontainebleau) team won. Such was the
strength of positive feedback about the powerful learning experience
and enjoyment of the event and the interest of business schools across
Europe, that ecch decided to grow the competition and invite many more
schools to take part.
INSEAD hosted the case challenge 2007 from 13-14 April at its Europe campus in Fontainebleau, France and for the first time the
event was presented in association with The Boston Consulting Group. IMD, Switzerland won the event with UCD Michael Smurfit School of Business, Ireland in second place and WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management, Germany in third place.
